Atrium Union West Medical Office Building

The Medical Office Building (MOB) is one of two structures by the same design team for a new health and wellness campus in Stallings, NC.  As a supporting structure to the adjacent 160,000 sf, 40-bed hospital, the MOB provides essential out-patient services to the broader health campus. The design is efficiently organized around a through-lobby that connects different parts of the pedestrian focused campus while a bridge from the hospital connects to the MOB on the second level.

Design of the MOB champions sustainable aspects of a compact, walkable health and wellness campus.  The client challenged the design team to depart from conventional hospital and MOB design to embrace a more welcoming medical campus that is intuitively organized and “doesn’t look like a hospital.”  To accomplish this, the design embraces the agrarian history of Stallings, a small farming town in transition to a bedroom community for nearby Charlotte.  The three-storied composition and earth-toned palette of the hospital and MOB reflect the character of their agrarian context and reduce the perceived scale of both.
